石川・金沢市内のスーパーにダイオウイカが運ばれ、お客さんを驚かせた。
客は「食べられるんですかね、これ? 売り物かと思って、びっくりしました」と話した。

The giant squid (genus: Architeuthis) is a deep-ocean dwelling squid in the family Architeuthidae, represented by as many as eight species. Giant squid can grow to a tremendous size (see Deep-sea gigantism): recent estimates put the maximum size at 13 m (43 ft) for females and 10 m (33 ft) for males from the posterior fins to the tip of the two long tentacles (second only to the colossal squid at an estimated 14 m (46 ft), one of the largest living organisms). The mantle is about 2 m (6.6 ft) long (more for females, less for males), and the length of the squid excluding its tentacles is about 5 m (16 ft). Claims of specimens measuring 20 m (66 ft) or more have not been scientifically documented.

水頭症の印少女 手術に成功

インドに住む水頭症で頭の膨れ上がった１歳児の女児ローナ・べグムちゃんの手術が５月­１５日、首都ニューデリーの病院で行われ、手術は成功した。

一般的な手術ができず頭か­ら髄液を外部に抜き、腹部に注入した。担当医師は今後はけん命なリハビリが必要だとい­う。
世界では５００人に１人の子どもが水頭症で苦しんでいるという。

エジプトで「数十年ぶり」雪が舞う　カイロも冬化粧砂漠気候のエジプトは１３日、この冬一番の寒波に見舞われ、各地で一時­、雪が降った。カイロ近郊でもうっすらと雪が積もり、子供たちは大喜び。各地で降雪が­確認されたのは「数十年ぶり」（地元メディア）という。

降雪が確認されたのは、カイロ­近郊のほか、地中海沿岸の北部アレクサンドリア、北東部シナイ半島の一部など。カイロ­では最低気温５度を記録した。

Fisherman Catches World Record 206 Pound Albino Catfish

A British fisherman caught a record breaking 8 foot-long and 206-pound rare albino wels catfish while fishing on the River Ebro near Barcelona, Spain. Then he let it go.

Bernie Campbell tried for seven years to catch the rare fish, which breaks the previous record by 10 pounds.

“We go out obviously to catch big fish,” Campbell told ABC News. “It’s just one of those things we joked about because they are 1 in 10,000, I would say.”

Campbell, 54, works for CatMaster Tours and is part of a guided fishing tour. The world record was previously held at 196 pounds, caught by CatMaster Tours’ Phil Hilton.

Campbell detailed the strenuous fight he waged one-on-one against the monster.

“It’s like fighting with a boss,” Campbell said. “If you could imagine putting a rope on the back of a car, holding on to the rope and letting someone drive away, that’s what it’s like.”

“It’s power against power,” he continued. “You’re determined to get it in and the catfish is determined you’re not going to, and the best one wins. Fortunately, that was me.”

庭の小さなダンゴムシと同じ等脚類の仲間は世界中に9000種以上が知られていますが­、このダイオウグソクムシはその中で最大の生物です。日本の海にはいませんが、大西洋­やインド洋の水深約800mに棲んでいます。その大きさは体長45cm、体重1.7k­gにもなるので、ちょっとした子猫と同じです。初めて見たときの印象？うわー、ありえ­ない大きさだ！と一歩引いてしまいました。
